I believe that sharing your masturbation with friends and like-minded guys is great, and at the gym you may be in an environment where men are more body conscious, perhaps a bit horny after working out and looking at other guys, and perhaps some are just curious to watch another guy arouse himself in a non threatening situation. I think masturbation outdoors could be a wonderful experience, but not if it places you in a potentially unsafe situation, or perhaps children or people who aren't open-minded might see you. I hope I don't sound prudish. Personally, I would love to unexpectedley stumble upon a guy masturbating, and the few times it has happened to me in life I've found it very arousing (I know that some of the guys masturbate in the gents toilet at work though no-ones ever actually admitted it).
